«Today they do not let us honour grandfathers, tomorrow your son will go to the gay-parade».
May 9th is "The Victory Day" according to Soviet tradition. VE day is celebrated twice in Ukraine: the official national memorial day on the 8th and for people with soviet or pro-Russian views on the 9th. Nowadays, the day and the way people memorize the VE becomes a field for manifestation of ideology, values, mindsets etc. Which often leads to conflicts on this day.
In 2020, during the complete lockdown veterans of Soviet wars gathered to glorify victory over Nazism. In the past, most of them were taking part in international military operations as Prague 1968, Budapest 1956, Kabul 1979 etc. They’re very proud of it.
For several years, many of them pretended to be veterans of the Second World War despite the obvious difference in age and random chest medals. Now, as "the successors of the ancestral cause" they share their interpretations of what people fought for during the Second World War and how it all turned out today in their opinion. They often make racist, homophobic and sexist speeches, including all conspiracy theories. Because of the quarantine restrictions, many decided to stay at home, so this time the concentration of absurdity was noticeable.
